Why is a crown necessary if my tooth is not broken?

If a tooth has a crack or looks like it is going to break, I am going to recommend a crown. The best thing we can do is to prevent the tooth from breaking, and a crown will do this. If a tooth breaks, it can cause a host of problems. And you never know where it is going to break. It could end up causing a lot of pain. Or it can end up splitting in half. Therefore, it is important to take care of it early.

Why are my teeth sensitive to cold?

I had treatment for gum disease. Why do I need to come in so often?

Gum disease cannot be cured. It has to be maintained. So it is vital that you come in regularly so that we can check on your gums. We will make sure that you are adequately cleaning them. If things start to change then we can address it sooner rather than later. Bacteria takes up to 3 months to start causing damage again in the gum pockets. Gum disease can relapse. It is important to maintain your oral health. In the beginning, you should come in every 3 months. With good oral hygiene, you can extend the visits to 4 months or even 6 months. If you have been treated for gum disease, it is normal to have some sensitivity to cold. Maybe a little bit of bleeding. But if anything persists longer than a few days, then you should give us a call.

How often should I visit the dentist?

If you have healthy gums, you should visit the dentist twice a year. If you have gum disease (looks like red, inflamed gums), you should get a deep cleaning at the dentist’s office at least 3-4 times per year - otherwise, you are putting yourself at serious risk of tooth loss.

A filling has been recommended. Why doesn’t my tooth hurt?

Why do I need a night guard?

Anybody can benefit from a night guard. If you clench, grind or wake up in the morning with a headache or your jaw hurts, then you really need a nightguard. Studies have shown that they can reduce wear and tear on the teeth, as well as breakage, by up to 50%, even when you are not wearing it during the day. Why do my gums bleed?

Healthy gums do not bleed. Gums that bleed are inflamed. This could be caused by plaque and bacteria that sits on the gums. It could be caused by aggressive brushing. It can be caused by trauma. What exactly is a cavity?

A cavity is a hole in a tooth that is created by bacteria. Bacteria create acid and that starts to eat away at the integrity of the tooth. If a cavity is left unrepaired, once it gets big enough there is nothing that you can do to reverse it. It only gets bigger and bigger. How long will my restoration last?

Unfortunately, no restoration lasts forever. It is important that you maintain regular visits to the dentist so that we can check up on these restorations. The average filling can last 2-3 years. The average crown can last 5-7 years. We use the best materials, which last the longest. It is up to the patient to take care of their teeth and to keep up on regular dental visits.

How safe are dental x-rays?

Dental X-rays are very safe. We only use digital X-ray technology, which offers even less radiation exposure - 70-80% less than traditional dental x-rays. For comparison, a regular chest x-ray is about 2800 times that of a single dental x-ray.
